A former Richmond U.S. Postal Service employee who in March pleaded guilty to stealing mail from more than 180 people has been sentenced to 13 months in prison.
Authorities said mail carrier Wendy Lawrence, 40, for several months in the fall 2022 removed envelopes “entrusted to her care ... (from) the mail stream” and took them to her Chesterfield County home. Lawrence then stole checks, gift cards and various other items found in the envelopes.
She also used bank account information obtained from stolen mail to make electronic payments for personal expenses including her rent, tax bill and pest control treatments, authorities said. Officials estimated that financial losses for all of Lawrence’s victims totaled as much as $40,000.

Court records on Wednesday show the charges were downgraded in the cases ofWavie Jones,Brandon RodgersandKaiyell Sanders.
In September 2022, Lawrence used bank account information from one victim to wire $10,542 from the victim’s bank account to cover her rent, investigators said. She then requested a fraudulent address change on behalf of the victim to redirect the victim’s mail to her own residence.
While serving a search warrant on Lawrence’s home in October 2022, investigators found checks belonging to at least 30 individuals, according to court records. On several of the checks — which ranged in value from roughly $900 to $5,000 — Lawrence had forged her name in the “pay to the order of” section.
Lawrence pleaded guilty on Feb. 29 to one count of mail theft.
The case came as Virginia’s mail service quality plummeted, ranking last in the nation by the beginning of 2024 before rebounding slightly, the Richmond Times-Dispatch previously reported. Residents and business owners consistently have reported significant mail delays and service disruptions that officials have struggled to address.
In mid-May, officials reported that Virginia’s mail service was no longer the worst in the country, although it still falls in the bottom 10.
