Variations in the branching pattern of femoral artery in full term human fetuses

Introduction: Femoral vessel catheterization is used in neonatal intensive care units for various neonatal health conditions. The present study is to find out the variations in the branching pattern of femoral artery in new born babies which could increase the risk of complications. Materials and Methods: 10 full term dead embalmed fetuses were collected from the Department of Anatomy. Total 20 lower limbs were dissected. Results: Out of 20 extremities 9 showed variations and 11 were normal. Variations observed were – common truck for superficial circumflex femoral and superficial external pudendal arteries, medial; circumflex femoral artery from femoral artery, common point of origin of medial and lateral circumflex femoral and profunda femoris artery and double femoral artery. Conclusion: The variations found in this study may be helpful to the neonatal and pediatric surgeons while dealing with femoral vessel catheterization.

Branches of the Internal Iliac Artery in Neonates An Anatomical Study.

The internal iliac artery is one of the terminal branches of the common iliac artery. It supplies the pelvic organs, the gluteal region, the perineum and the proximal part of the thigh. This artery usually divides into anterior and posterior divisions. The anterior division in males gives umbilical, superior vesical, inferior vesical, middle rectal, obturator, internal pudendal and inferior gluteal arteries. In females, the inferior vesical artery is usually absent and the vagin*l and uterine arteries are the additional branches from the anterior division. The posterior division gives iliolumbar, lateral sacral and superior gluteal arteries. The branching pattern of the internal iliac artery might have some variations during cadaveric dissections and surgeries. Some of these variations are of surgical and clinical importance and ignoring them might result in alarming bleeding during surgical procedures. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out the anatomical branching pattern of neonatal internal iliac artery and to correlate with the arrangement of the internal iliac branches in adults. Thirty-six neonatal pelvic halves were used as specimens that were obtained from eighteen dead neonates composed of twelve males and six females. Dissection done in the Forensic Medicine Unit in Tikrit Teaching Hospital through a period from August 2011 to September 2012. This study revealed that the internal iliac artery was in line with the common iliac artery and larger than the external iliac artery and three types of branching were observed based on the large branches namely superior gluteal artery, inferior gluteal artery and internal pudendal artery. The present study showed that the most common arrangement had two large trunks originating from internal iliac artery, the posterior one being superior gluteal artery and the anterior one divided into internal pudendal and inferior gluteal arteries; while the other patterns lead to variable branching patterns in adults that are of embryological and surgical significance.

Persistent median artery was studied in 60 upper limbs of 30 neonatal cadavers. It was found in 12 (20%) specimens while partial atrophy in the distal part of the median artery was detected in 9 (15%) specimens. These findings correlated well with those of other series including the authors’ previous study which covered both adults and neonates. There was no significant difference statistically between the authors’ current and previous studies (p>0,05). Therefore both studies were combined. The incidence of persistent median artery in this enlarged series (100 specimens) was 17%. This rate of persistent median artery was higher than those of most other published series. We believe this may be due to evolutionary and racial trends; the neonatal origin of our specimens would be another differing factor. Evaluation of Cases with Single Umbilical Artery

Objective: To define the diagnosis of fetuses with single umblical artery and define the accompanying anomalies and associated perinatal com-plications. Methods: The records of the fetuses and newborns with single umbilical artery diagnosed within the last six years in our clinic were investi-gated retrospectively. The cases were compared according to demographical data and perinatal complications. The data obtained from retro-spective research were analysed with SPSS software. Results: We detected 26 fetuses and newborns with single umblical artery and the incidence was found to be 5.5 in 1000 deliveries. Chromosomal and structural anomalies were detected in six and two of the fetuses, respectively. The fetal weights of single umblical artery and control group were 3037±82 gr and 3294 ± 609.35 gr, respectively.
