I bought this new at the end of 2009 in Portland Oregon. Had it shipped across town to Northwest Quadvan. They converted it to a 4 x 4, using the axles from a 2009 Harley Davidson pick up. Solid rear axle with an Eaton Trutrac geared locker in the rear. Low range. 4 x 4 activated from a switch on the dashboard, although I always use the controls on the front hubs. There is an E-locker on the front diff, although I have not used it in a long time. A 46 gallon fuel tank, installed by Quadvan. I had an extra leaf added to the spring pack along the way at Deaver springs in California and then Quadvan adjusted the angle of the shaft. They refreshed the shafts about six years ago.
Quadvan installed an Aluminess roof rack, Aluminess rear bumper, and Baja box. The front bumper is steel and was the hand built prototype from Buckstop bumpers in Oregon. The current set-up for electric is from Tekris Power in New Jersey, top-notch professional work. Four 6 VVictron batteries that are less than three years old. Two new solar panels and a controller. A 2000 watt magnum inverter. The solar panels trickle charge the batteries when you park it in the sun. NW Power Conversion heavy duty alternator. The electrical setup is superb and comes from my days making films. I have maintained this and the rest of the van. Three quad AC outlets. The black stuff on the inverter is from Gorilla tape and I can clean that off. Just wanted to get the photos up.
There’s an Engel fridge on a sliding tray and I built a galley box that folds out to make a small table on one of the side doors. You could gut it easily and remake the inside any way you prefer, but the basic framework is there for a camper van. I have carried a small portable toilet, but again, this and the portable shower option are up to you. It’s a tank and you could use it as-is or consider it a blank slate if you rip out all the wood.
I insulated the van with sound-deadening panels, and then sound-deadening paint. Over that went a layer of foil backed jute.That is covered by either birch plywood or fiberglass, reinforced, tape, depending on where in the van you are. All hand-built shelves that could be removed easily. A platform under which you can put anything you want, but it fits the height of plastic milk crates. There’s a 12,000 pound winch on the front, but I have not used that in years and cannot vouch for its condition. It should work, but no guarantees on that. The transmission was rebuilt at around 110,000 miles.I have maintained this van scrupulously over the years, during which it has mainly had highway miles. I have all the records and will part with them and the factory manuals that I have. I basically want it to find a good home. It drives like a dream. I would not hesitate to drive it across country today. You are buying an older vehicle and things will break on it. The good news about the E350 and the 5.4L engine is that you can get it serviced anywhere.
I have always used Mobil1 oil. The differentials were serviced last year by Ford, along with the radiator. The air conditioning system was overhauled at Ford about a year and a half ago.
I’ve always had the seats covered with neoprene covers. It is not a luxury van, but you can sleep in it safely and it holds the heat and does a pretty good job when it’s warm out, also. There’s an Aluminess ladder to the roof. Currently is running Wrangler Duratrak LT 10-ply tires with plenty of tread left. I’d prefer to keep this van, which I have put a lot of time, money and love into, but circ*mstances dictate otherwise.
